COLLEGE STATION -- Regional foes abound as the Texas A&M men’s tennis team travels to the ITA South Central Regional Men’s Tennis Championship on Oct. 20-23 at the Penick-Allison Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.

Players from A&M along with host Texas, Baylor, Rice, Texas Tech, Lamar, UTSA, Texas-Arlington, SE Louisiana, Centenary, SMU, Prairie View A&M, TCU, UT-Pan American and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will vie for the top spots in singles and doubles at the tournament which will automatically qualify for the ITA National Indoors on Nov. 1-4 in Columbus, Ohio.

Last season, the Aggies finished third regionally and had two of their own ranked among the top 10 singles players in the region in senior All-American Jerry Makowski (Bradenton, Fla.) and junior Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas). Both are currently ranked No. 34 and No. 37 respectively in the preseason ITA/FILA Collegiate Tennis Rankings. They are joined by senior Matt Bain (Georgetown, Texas), junior Stephen Shields (Austin, Texas), sophomore Chris Chirico (Philadelphia, Pa.), sophomore Brad Williams (Cape Town, South Africa) and freshman Kayvon Karimi (Dallas, Texas).

“This is the culmination of the big tournaments in the fall,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “Regionals is another chance to test ourselves against the better teams. It also shows us how our players stack up against the good Big 12 Conference and regional teams. When the regular season rolls around, three teams in our region will be ranked in the top 10. We are likely to see some of these teams during the regular season and in the postseason. It affords us another opportunity to get our players mentally and physically ready for the spring season ahead.”

The tournament will begin on Saturday, Oct. 20 with doubles play scheduled to begin at 8:30 a.m. The first two rounds of doubles will be contested before the singles competition begins later in the afternoon.

Pollock Makes Good Run at Futures Tourney…A day after earning just his third ATP singles point, junior Conor Pollock lost to third-seeded Carsten Ball, 7-5, 6-3, in the round of 16 at the 2007 USTA Mansfield Futures Tournament held Thursday at the Walnut Creek Country Club in Mansfield, Texas. Pollock was competing at the tourney as an amateur and earned a wild card entry into the 32-player singles main draw. Ball, a native Australian ranked No. 504 in the world, advanced to the quarterfinals.
