COLLEGE STATION, Texas- With at least a piece of the 2007 Big 12 title in their back pockets, the 2nd-ranked Texas A&M soccer team will continue to push through league play, hosting the Texas Tech Red Raiders on Sunday at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. Kick off is slated for 1:30 p.m.
“We need to come out and take care of business on Sunday against a Texas Tech team that is really playing well,” A&M head coach G Guerrieri said. “Every game is important for us right now. We are playing for something bigger than the Big 12 championship. We are playing for the win so we can keep playing at home through the NCAA Tournament.”
En route to their eighth straight victory on Friday night, the Aggies clinched a part of their fourth consecutive conference regular season championship as Missouri and Texas both fell 1-0 to Iowa State and Oklahoma State, respectively.
A&M (14-2-1, 7-1-0) posted a goal in the first half and five in the second to trample over the University of Wisconsin- Milwaukee Panthers 6-1 in front of 3,082 fans on Friday. Sophomore Cydne Curie was responsible for giving the Aggies the lead heading into halftime as she bounced a deflection just over the hands of a leaping UWM keeper. Senior Elisabeth Jones was able to put the game out of reach for the Panthers as the forward netted three goals in a span of just 10 minutes for her first collegiate hat-trick.
Under the direction of first-year head coach Tom Stone; Tech brings a 7-6-2 overall, 5-3-1 league record into Sunday’s match against the Aggies. On Friday, Tech posted a 2-1 victory over the Baylor Lady Bears, scoring two goals in the last 10 minutes of the match to come from behind for the win. Sophomores Sarabeth Clopton and Zhaleh Rezaie netted the goals that gave Tech the victory. Rezaie leads the Red Raider attack with four goals this season and one assist.
Sunday will serve as the 14th meeting between the two sides with the Aggies holding a 12-1-0 all time advantage. Tech’s only victory came in 1999; a 1-0 shutout in Lubbock.
Last season Nicole Ketchum posted two goals against Tech in Lubbock to earn a 4-2-road victory for the Aggies.
