Aggies Prepare For U.S. National Team

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 11th-ranked Texas A&M women’s basketball team will face two of the top 10 teams in the world in a nine-day span as the Aggies take on the U.S. Women’s National Team headlined by three-time Olympian Lisa Leslie in its second exhibition tilt of the season on Sunday, Nov. 11 at 6 p.m. at Reed Arena.

Team USA is coming off a silver-medal finish at the FIBA World League Tournament which automatically qualified them for the 2008 Summer Olympics in Beijing, China. They are currently ranked No. 1 in the world. The Aggies defeated the Chinese National Team, 76-70, in their first exhibition matchup on Nov. 3. China is currently ranked No. 10 in the world and finished fourth behind the U.S. and Russia at the FIBA Tournament last month.

Prior to the contest, the Aggie women will be presented with their 2007 Big 12 Conference Championship rings. Last season, A&M finished the regular season with a program-best 13-3 record in league play with sweeps over Oklahoma, Baylor, Texas Tech and Oklahoma State. They were predicted to defend their title by the league’s head coaches in the Big 12 preseason poll.

The 10-member traveling squad includes former collegiate and WNBA stars such as LSU’s Seimone Augustus (Minnesota Lynx), Connecticut’s Sue Bird (Seattle Storm), Georgia’s Kara Braxton (Detroit Shock), Connecticut’s Swin Cash (Detroit Shock), Liberty’s Katie Feenstra (Detroit Shock), Tennessee’s Kara Lawson (Sacramento Monarchs), St. Edward’s Taj McWilliams-Franklin (Los Angeles Sparks), Connecticut’s Diana Taurasi (Phoenix Mercury) and Texas’ Jamie Carey (Connecticut Sun).

Team USA is coached by Seattle Storm head coach and former three-time All-American Anne Donovan. A&M is one of eight schools on the squad’s 2007 College Tour which includes stops at Maryland (Oct. 31), Connecticut (Nov. 2), defending national champion Tennessee (Nov. 4), Baylor (Nov. 6), Arizona State (Nov. 8), USC (Nov. 13) and Stanford (Nov. 15).

In celebration of Veterans Day, all local veterans will receive two free tickets to the game and additional tickets can be purchased for $2. Former and current Corps of Cadets members along with local VFW members will be in attendance. Karen Chavez will perform “God Bless America” at halftime, while a court-size American flag is unfolded by the Corps.

Making A Difference…Aggie Athletes Involved will sponsor a coat drive prior to the women’s basketball exhibition game versus the U.S. National Team. Candy 95 will have a remote set up prior to the game and student-athletes will be stationed at the Candy vehicle to collect donations. All donors will receive a voucher good for half-price admission to the exhibition game and be entered into a drawing for an autographed basketball. All donated coats and blankets will be donated to Twin City Mission in Bryan.
