SAN ANTONIO- The 2nd-ranked Texas A&M soccer team opens Big 12 Tournament play as the No. 1 seed against the eighth-seeded Iowa State Cyclones Wednesday in San Antonio. Kickoff is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. at the Blossom Soccer Stadium.
Iowa State ended regular season play at 8-6-4 overall, 4-4-2 in league play with a 2-2 draw against Nebraska Friday in Lincoln. Jordan Bishop and Stephanie Kaphingst netted goals for the Cyclones. Bishop’s goal was her fourth overall and her third in the last four games. Kaphingst’s goal moved her into a tie for fourth in program history with 15 on her career. Casey Bothwell, Lauren Fader, and Leslie Hill added assists for ISU.
Elise Reid leads the Cyclones in scoring this season with five goals and an assist, totaling 11 points. Brittanie Waddell and Leslie Hill are tied for the team lead in assists with four apiece.
The Cyclones are 0-7-1 in Big 12 Championship games and have lost five consecutive at the annual tournament. The lone tie came in the 1999 quarterfinals against Texas A&M. Iowa State would advance to the semifinals with a 5-4 advantage in penalty kicks.
Texas A&M boasts a record of 17-2-1, 9-1-0 in conference play after closing out regular season action with a 4-0 win over Baylor on Friday at the Aggie Soccer Stadium. All-American forward Ashlee Pistorius recorded all four of the Aggies’ goals marking her sixth career hat-trick.
The Aggies are 18-6-1 in Big 12 Championship games and had won seven straight in the tournament before falling to Colorado, 3-2, last season in the semifinal round.
A&M increased its all-time series lead to 12-1-1 after a 1-0 victory over ISU, Oct. 21, in Ames. The Cyclones’ only win came on Oct. 7, 2005, in College Station.
Pistorius, a senior from Bloomington, Ill., earned a series of awards this week. The MAC Hermann Trophy candidate was recently honored as the Big 12 Offensive Player of the Year and a fourth-time All-Big 12 first team selection. Her four-goal performance against Baylor earned her Big 12 Offensive Player of the Week and Soccer America Women’s Player of the Week honors. She was also selected as a member of the Soccer Buzz Elite Team of the Week.
