FRISCO, Texas - After leading Sam Houston State to a 56-54 home victory over Texas Tech on Wednesday, Shamir McDaniel has been voted this week's Southland Conference Men's Basketball Player of the Week. It is the first honor of his career.
McDaniel tied his career high with 18 points, with 15 of those points coming in the second half, as he led the Bearkats to a second victory in four meetings with Texas Tech and Head Coach Bob Knight.
McDaniel went 6-10 from floor and 5-8 from three point line. His field goal and free throw for three-point play with 44 seconds remaining in the game provided the winning points for the Bearkats.
A product of Converse Judson, McDaniel is in his third year as a Bearkat starter. Through two games, McDaniel leads the 2007-08 Bearkats in scoring with 15.5 points per game. McDaniel is a two-time Academic All-Southland Conference selection. He earned his bachelor's degree in marketing this summer, finishing with a 3.24 overall grade point average and is now working on his post graduate degree.
Sam Houston State plays Saint Gregory's University of Oklahoma Tuesday night in Huntsville, then hosts Fresno State Saturday at Johnson Coliseum. Both games tip at 7 p.m.
