Fewer than three days after Dennis Franchione announced his resignation as Texas A&M head football coach, the Aggies announced Friday Houston Texans assistant head coach Mike Sherman would take over.

Sherman, 52, also worked for six seasons as the head coach of the Green Bay Packers. He has spent the past two seasons as an assistant on Gary Kubiak's staff. Kubiak is a former A&M quarterback.

Sherman also has ties to A&M. He was the Aggies offensive line coach from 1989-93 and 1995-96 under R.C Slocum. Kubiak was A&M's running backs coach in 1992-93.

Sherman will not join the Aggies until the conclusion of the 2007 NFL season because he is under contractual obligation with the Texans.

He has agreed to a seven-year contract that will pay him $1.8 million annually.

Byrne said Sherman impressed him when the coach said he wanted less than Franchione was paid. Byrne said that would allow Sherman to have more available resources to hire assistant coaches.

Franchione took a contract buyout and stepped down Friday, less than an hour after the Aggies beat Texas 38-30.

Defensive coordinator Gary Darnell was named interim coach Saturday for the Aggies for their bowl game.

The Aggies are expecting an invitation Sunday.

For goodness sakes folks, Franchione got a better send off than he deserved considering the way he left Alabama in the middle of the night and he had the audacity to talk about how he cared for his players, yea right! Maybe now the offensive coaches can do their job, we certainly saw a hint of things to come in the Texas game since they were finally allowed to do the play calling. Sherman has my vote and so does Byrne. Let's just focus on the positives here. Fran is gone and the Aggies have a coach that cares and oh yea a professional too! Good luck Coach Sherman the 12th man is here for you.

I don't know a whole lot on coaches and who would have been best for the job. But I can say we have to also look at what Bryne has done for the rest of Aggie Sports. Basketball, Baseball, Track, and all the others. Let's just hope that Sherman is a good pick and will turn the Football Department around.

To publicize a university to potential donors and students, wouldn't it be more effective for the media to interview outstanding students that have a 4.0 GPA? Having the #1 football team should be at the bottom of the priority list! The former students just want to have the #1 team so they can say, "How 'bout those Aggies?" How retarded! A&M will continue to be a mediocre university if it continues to put sports as a top priority. Tear down Kyle field, and build a parking garage. Take the huge salaries of all the A&M coaches, and the ridiculous sports expenses, and put it back into the budget so students can afford to attend college.
