HUNTSVILLE, TX – Nikya Hughes scored 17 points to lead Arkansas-Little Rock to a 69-48 non-conference women’s basketball victory over Sam Houston State Sunday afternoon at Johnson Coliseum.
The hot-shooting Trojans were 27-of-48 from the field for a 56.3 shooting percentage as three other UALR players hit in double figures. Anshel Cooper scored 15, Chastity Reed 13, and Kim Sitzmann 11.
Whitney Smith and Lydia Gonzales led Sam Houston State with 14 and 10 points, respectively. The Bearkats were 19-of-51 from the field for a 37.3 shooting mean.
Twelve points off 10 Bearkat turnovers in the first half helped UALR build an early lead. The game was tied at 4-4 when the Trojans went on a 17-6 run to go up 21-10 with 4:59 to play before halftime. Sam Houston never cut the lead to less than 10 points again.
UALR out-rebounded the Bearkats 35 to 25 as Hughes pulled down eight boards. Gonzales led Sam Houston with seven rebounds.
Brittany Brooks and Britney Harris each had seven points for Sam Houston. LaToya Bennett and Deltrice Daniel each scored four points.
Arkansas-Little Rock’s biggest lead was 23 points, 67-44 with 3:10 to play. The Trojans upped their season mark to 6-2. Sam Houston State dropped to 1-9.
Sam Houston State now breaks for final exams. The Bearkats’ next game is Wednesday, Dec. 19, when the Kats play host to Auburn at Johnson Coliseum at 7 p.m.
