DALLAS—The defending Big 12 champion Texas A&M baseball team is ranked 20th in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association preseason poll, released Thursday.

The Aggies were one of five Big 12 teams appearing in the poll. Arizona State earned the No. 1 ranking, followed by North Carolina, Rice, South Carolina and Arizona.

A&M is scheduled to play a total of 18 games against teams appearing in the NCBWA preseason rankings, including No. 3 Rice, No. 6 Texas, No. 17 Missouri, No. 26 Baylor, No. 27 Oklahoma State and No. 35 Arkansas. Receiving votes were Louisiana Tech, Sam Houston State, TCU and UTSA.

The Aggies return 17 letterwinners, six position starters and two starting pitchers from a 2007 squad that went 48-19 and claimed the Big 12 Championship in Oklahoma City and the NCAA College Station Regional crown.

Texas A&M opens the 2008 season on February 22 at 6:30 p.m. when the Aggies host Northern Colorado. Season tickets for the 39-game home slate are available now by calling 888-99-AGGIE or by logging on to www.aggieathletics.com.
