COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Amanda Scarborough, a member of the Texas A&M softball team, has been named the RBI Foundation’s Preseason Collegiate Softball Player of the Year, the organization announced.
“Amanda is very deserving of the RBI Foundation's award,” A&M head coach Jo Evans said. “She has proven through the past three years that she is one of the premier softball players in the nation. She can do it all. She is a force on the mound, a tremendous threat at the plate, and is a terrific defensive player. To go along with all those skills, she is the consummate team player. She is a tremendous leader and makes her teammates better by virtue of her great skills and her impeccable work ethic. It is a pleasure to coach Amanda Scarborough.”
Scarborough, a two-time All-American, has amassed an impressive 67-23 record while posting a 1.39 ERA. The Magnolia, Texas native has fanned 503 hitters in 562.2 innings of work. At the plate, Scarborough boasts a career .347 batting average, driving in 112 runs off 39 doubles, 6 triples, and 23 homeruns. She is a three-time All-Big 12 first team selection and was the conference’s Co-Pitcher of the Year last season adding to the Big 12 Freshman of the Year and Player of the Year accolades she garnered in 2005.
“I'm very honored to have been selected as the RBI Foundation’s Preseason Collegiate Softball Player of the Year,” Scarborough noted. "This award is a great compliment to me and more importantly Texas A&M and the softball program. My success can be attributed to the hard work and dedication of my coaches and fellow teammates."
Scarborough will receive the award on Saturday at the 16th Annual RBI Foundation Awards Dinner held at the Westin Galleria Hotel in Houston.
Also being honored by the RBI Foundation is Kelsea Orsak of Pearland High School. Orsak, who recently signed with A&M, has been honored as one of the Preseason High School Softball Players of the Year.
“Kelsea is an exciting young player,” Evans said. “She has great athleticism. Her speed is exceptional and she is a powerful, explosive player. She is versatile and has the ability to play numerous positions. She has great work ethic and is an unselfish player. She will be an exciting player to follow throughout her remaining year of high school and her college career. She has unlimited potential.”
