COLLEGE STATION -- The Texas A&M softball team earned a No. 3 ranking from the ESPN.com/USA Softball Collegiate Preseason Poll, the organization announced today.
Defending national champion Arizona locked up the No. 1 spot receiving 14 of the 20 first place votes. Arizona State, who finished at 54-17 last season, secured the No. 2 position.
The Big 12 placed five teams in Top 25, A&M (3), Oklahoma (5), Baylor (9), Missouri (21) and Texas (T24).
In addition to the four conference opponents, A&M will face eight other teams listed in the preseason poll (Arizona (1), Northwestern (6), DePaul (8), Washington (14), Georgia Tech (18), Oregon State (19), Louisiana-Lafayette (20) and Cal State Fullerton (T24).
The Aggies return eight starters, including two-time All-Americans Amanda Scarborough and Megan Gibson, and nine letterwinners from its ‘07 squad that finished 46-14 and made its sixth appearance at the NCAA Women’s College World Series.
A&M opens the 2008 season in Cathedral City, Calif. at the Cathedral City Kickoff (Feb. 8-10).
The Ags home opener is scheduled for Feb. 13 against Sam Houston State at 4 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.
