Ag Men Net Win Over Huskies

COLLEGE STATION, Texas – The 22nd-ranked Texas A&M men’s tennis team improved to 3-0 on the season with a 5-2 victory over No. 37 Washington Sunday afternoon at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.

The Aggies tamed the Huskies (2-2) early by capturing the doubles point which eluded A&M in its first two dual matches against Clemson and Boise State. Junior Conor Pollock (San Antonio, Texas) and freshman Austin Krajicek (Brandon, Fla.) continued outstanding doubles play at the top of the lineup for the Aggies by defeating Washington’s Derek Drabble and Patrik Fischer, 8-3. Senior Matt Bain (Georgetown, Texas) and freshman Wil Spencer (Ponce de Leon, Fla.) followed by clinching the doubles point for A&M with an 8-3 result over Brad Bator and Martin Kildahl, 8-3, at No. 3.

“The doubles point really set the tone for the match,” Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton said. “I thought we did a lot better in today’s match and improved from our previous two matches. Our doubles play carried over into our singles matches, allowing a few of our guys to get off to good starts. It really made the difference in the match and helped us carry momentum into singles.”

The Aggies won four of their six singles matches on the wings of Pollock, ranked No. 23 nationally, who clinched the dual match with a straight-set victory over UW’s top player Patrik Fischer, 6-2, 6-3. He has compiled an undefeated 3-0 mark at the No. 1 line for A&M.

Rookies Spencer and Krajicek continued to show their athletic range with straight-set victories at No. 2 and No. 4 losing only a combined five games through two sets. Spencer downed Andy Kuharszky, 6-2, 6-2, while Krajicek defeated Tobi Obenaus 6-1, 6-0. Playing at the No. 3 position in the lineup, senior All-American Jerry Makowski (Bradenton, Fla.) battled from a 0-6 setback in his first set, to overcome Washington’s Jeevan Nedunchezhiyan in a three-setter, 7-6 (3), 6-3.

The Aggies will take on archrival Texas in a non-conference battle for the Texas Cup on Friday, Feb. 8 at 6 p.m. at the Downtown Club at the Met in Houston.
