COLLEGE STATION -- The Texas A&M softball team’s 24-game home slate gets under way Wednesday, when the third-ranked Aggies play host to the Bearkats of Sam Houston State. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at the Aggie Softball Complex.

“We are looking forward to opening our home season on Wednesday,” A&M head coach Jo Evans said. “Sam Houston had a great season last year and I expect them to be even stronger this year. We hope to get a great crowd out to the ballpark on Wednesday. Our players feed off the energy of our crowd and I am excited for our fans to see our young players compete.”

Sam Houston State opened its 2008 season with a pair of 13-0 shutouts over Prairie View A&M Saturday afternoon at the Bearkat Softball Stadium. Junior Brandi Crnkovic tossed the third perfect game in Sam Houston history and the Bearkats tied a school record with four home runs in one game as SHSU improved to 2-0 on the season.

A&M opened the 2008 season going 4-1 at the Cathedral City Kickoff in Cathedral City, Calif. over the weekend. The Aggies picked up a 3-2 win over New Mexico State before falling 5-1 to Cal Poly on Friday. On Saturday, A&M posted victories over Cal State Northridge and No. 18 Oregon State, 3-0 and 9-1 respectively. The Ags scored four runs in the first inning and five in third en route to a 9-0 win over Utah State on Sunday to close out tournament play.

Wednesday’s match-up marks the 89th meeting between the two schools. A&M owns the all-time series record at an impressive 75-13.

The two teams met three times in 2007 with the Aggies outscoring the Bearkats 29-5. A&M blanked SHSU 9-0 during the regular season in Huntsville on Feb. 28 before posting 9-5 and 11-0 wins in the College Station Regional to bring Sam Houston’s season to a close.
