COLLEGE STATION, Texas- Senior All-American Amanda Scarborough tossed her third career no-hitter as the third-ranked Texas A&M softball team (5-1) blanked the Sam Houston State Bearkats (2-1) 6-0 in front of 999 fans at the Aggie Softball Complex on Wednesday.
“It was great to see Scarborough come out and throw the way she did,” A&M head coach Jo Evans said. “I know she was pretty excited about throwing a no-hitter in the first home game. She had all her pitches working, moving the ball well and her drop-ball looked really good. I thought she was in total control and really relaxed out there.”
After allowing Hailey Wiginton and Casie Everitt to reach in the first inning, Scarborough dug down and retired the next 19 batters. She improved to 2-1 on the season, finishing the evening with five strikeouts and just one walk.
Freshman outfielder Kelsey Spittler was responsible for A&M’s winning run as she logged the first homerun of her Aggie career, a one-out bomb over the right-centerfield wall in the fourth inning. The homerun propelled the Aggies to plate four more runs in the inning as A&M’s first five batters each recorded hits, including RBI doubles by seniors Megan Gibson and Jamie Hinshaw.
“Kelsey set the table for us in the fourth inning, Evans said. “You can see we have a pretty potent lineup, a lot of different kids that can swing the bat well. All nine of them are very good hitters. It was just a matter of time before our kids got their timing down and relaxed a little bit. It was nice to see us put some hits together there.”
A&M’s designated player Rhi Kliesing led off the fifth with a double in the left-centerfield gap. Macie Morrow used her third hit of the day to drive in Andrea Tovar with an infield single. Tovar entered the game as a pinch runner for Kliesing.
Morrow, Scarborough and Spittler each logged multi-hit games, combining for seven of A&M’s 12 hits.
Brandi Crnkovic (1-1) was charged with the loss for the Bearkats. The junior worked three and a third innings allowing five runs on nine hits. Crnkovic walked two and struckout three.
The Aggies head to Tempe, Ariz. this weekend for the Kajikawa Classic hosted by Arizona State. A&M will kickoff the tournament on Friday with a game against Nevada at 2 p.m.
