HOUSTON -- They're going to unvail a monument to honor former Houston Rockets star Hakeem Olajuwon in April, but in keeping with his Islamic beliefs, the tribute won't include a picture or likeness of the NBA great.
The monument will be built outside the Rockets' arena. It's been
in the works for two years.
Rockets owner Leslie Alexander told Houston television station
KRIV that it's a wonderful monument to the greatest player in the
history of Houston sports.
Olajuwon led the Rockets to two NBA championships, and he the
most valuable player in the finals both those years.
Olajuwon says he's grateful for the thoughtfulness of those
planning the monument. He says a statue of him would have run
against his religious beliefs.
