CLEARWATER, FL - Brittany Mathews, who ranks among the top 10 in NCAA Division I softball in strike outs this season, shut out Sam Houston State as Kennesaw State blanked the Bearkats 3-0 in the first round of the University of South Florida Softball Invitational Thursday.
Mathews struck out eight of the 24 batters she faced. Alex Survant, Morgan Mikulin, and Tanya Hooser each produced a single for the Bearkats.
Kennesaw scored a run in the first, second, and sixth innings. Jenna Closner hit a solo home run in the second inning.
Mikulin was the losing pitcher, giving up six hits while striking out three
Next up for Sam Houston State in the tournament is Indiana.
