Corpus Christi- Chris Daniels put up a game-high 20 points and eight rebounds to lead Texas A&M-Corpus Christi to a 70-63 win over Sam Houston State in the American Bank Center.

Sam Houston State (22-7, SLC 10-6) and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (9-20, SLC 6-10) closed out the regular season with the game. The Bearkats will be the number three seed in next week's Southland Conference post-season tournament. TAMUCC did not make the eight team field at Katy.

Ashton Mitchell led Sam Houston with 13 points. John Gardiner added 11.

Both teams struggled early, hitting under 40 percent in the first half, but a 13-4 lead midway through the first gave the Bearkats an eight point advantage, which they would hold until the 5:51 mark. The Islanders chipped away, using an 11-2 run to cut the lead to one with 2:46 to go in the first.

Horace Bond opened the second half with a layup at the 18:57 mark of the second half to give the Islanders the lead, but Sam Houston’s John Gardiner scored five of his 11 points over the next three minutes, helping the Bearkats to a 11-4 run to take a 43-37 advantage with 14:02 to go.

Both teams would exchange buckets until A&M-Corpus Christi used a 15-2 run that eventually gave it a 60-57 lead with 4:47. The Islanders would not lose the lead again.

The Bearkats scored just six points in the final 3:55 of the game, while A&M-Corpus Christi close out the game with 10 points during that stretch.
