Catcher Nick Spears hit a grand slam home run over the right field fence in the top of the seventh inning to power Texas-Pan American in a 12-6 victory over Sam Houston State in the first game of a doubleheader Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium.
Sam Houston State totaled 19 hits to win the nightcap over UTPA 12-8.
Designated hitter Nick Zaleski went 3-for-5 at the plate in the second game with three RBIs. Seth Hammock also added three RBIs.
Texas-Pan American now stands 4-8 while Sam Houston State is 9-5.
Jaime Rohlmeier led the Bearkats at the plate in the first game, going
2-for-3 with four RBIs on a two-run double and a two-run triple.
With an unearned run in the first inning and a five-run third inning, the
Broncs jumped out to 5-0 lead.
Sam Houston went scoreless for the first four innings, then put up two runs in the bottom of the fifth. With one out, Ryan Trevino and Jaime Rohlmeier hit back-to-back doubles for the Kats' first run. After a second out, Trevino hit the third double of the inning to score Rohlmeier, cutting the margin to 6-2.
Texas-Pan American added a run in the top of the sixth inning on an RBI
single by Andrew Perez.
In the bottom of the sixth, singles by Nick Zaleski and Ryan Weber and a
base on balls for Heath Pugh loaded the bases. Trevino was hit by a pitch to score Zaleski and Rohlmeier hit a sacrifice fly to score Pugh.

Dallas Gallant (0-2) was the losing pitcher in the first game. Will Skelton
was the winner for Sam Houston in the second game, allowing only five hits in six innings and striking out four batters.
Sam Houston State will host the University of Houston Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. at Don Sanders Stadium.
