SLC Honors Bright, McDaniel

KATY, Texas - Sam Houston State's Ryan Bright has received first team all-league honors for the second consecutive year and Shamir McDaniel is an honorable mention selection as the 2008 All-Southland Conference men's basketball team has been announced.

Bright led the Southland Conference in rebounds this year with 10.9 boards per game and is Sam Houston State's second leading scorer for 2008 with an 11.4 scoring average. Bright has scored in double figures in 19 games this season and in 73 in his career. He was pulled down double figure rebounds in 15 contests in 2008, leading the team's top rebounder in 28 of SHSU's 29 games this season.

Shamir McDaniel led Sam Houston in scoring this season with 12.1 points and ranks fourth in the league in three point accuracy. He has started all 29 games, scoring in double figures 20 times.

Josh Alexander of Stephen F. Austin was named the 2008 Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Player of the Year.

Joining Bright and Alexander on the first-team are Lamar Sanders of Lamar, Northwestern State’s Trey Gilder, and SLC Newcomer of the Year Kenny Dawkins of Lamar.

Freshman of the Year honors went to UTSA’s Devin Gibson.Coach of the Year honors went to SFA’s Danny Kaspar, after he guided the Lumberjacks to a 25-4 overall record this season. Kaspar is the second Lumberjack coach to claim the honor, joining Ned Fowler in 1991.

The Southland Conference men's basketball post-season tournament begins Thursday. Sam Houston State, the number three seed, will take on number six seeded McNeese at 2:30 p.m. at the Merrill Center in Katy.
