Kats Win Conference Opener

Huntsviile -- Todd Sebek extended his hitting streak to 17 games (counting the NCAA regional finals game against Mississippi last June) with three hits, batting in three runs to lead Sam Houston State to a 10-9 victory over Central Arkansas in the Southland Conference opener for both teams Friday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

Sebek went 3-for-4 as Sam Houston State totaled 14 hits. The Bearkats upped their season record to 10-6 while UCA dropped to 7-9. The three-game SLC series continues Saturday at 2 p.m.

With two outs in the opening inning, Bobby Verbick tripled off the center field, then scored on an infield hit by Nick Zaleski. Daniel Nottebart singled to right field to move Zaleski to third base. Zaleski scored on an error on the right fielder’s throw to third on the play, giving Sam Houston a 2-0 lead.

Sebek’s first hit was a single up the middle to lead off the bottom of the third inning. Keith Stein was safe at first on an error and Verbick walked to load the bases. Zaleski singled in Sebek and Stein scored on a double play grounder by Nottebart to put SHSU up 4-0.

Josh Huffman singled in the fourth, then moved to third on a double down the left field line by Chris Davis. Ken Taylor walked to load the bases. Back-to-back doubles by Scott Clint and Jonathan Yerby tied the score 4-4. A walk and a ground out moved Yerby to third and the third baseman scored on a sacrifice fly to right by Payton Seelinger, Kevin Rawls singled in Houk to put Central Arkansas up 6-4 and end Bearkat's
starting pitcher Ryan Tepera’s evening on the mound. Justin Jackson got a strike to end the inning.

Tepera, in his first start, gave up six hits and six runs while striking out four in three and two-thirds innings.

Justin Jackson gave up three runs on three hits and three walks, striking out one batter in three and one-third innings of relief action to get the win. Zac Baker took over in the eighth inning. Casey Springer pitched in the ninth inning to pick up his third save of the season.

Sebek singled again in the bottom of the fourth to score Ryan Weber who doubled with one out. Another double by Stein scored Sebek to tie the contest again 6-6.

Mark Wyatt led off the bottom of the fifth with a solo home run to left field. Sebek added a two-run double to put the Kats up 9-6.

Central Arkansas cut the margin to 9-7 with a run in the sixth inning as Graham Martin and Payton Seelinger hit back-to-back single and Martin later scored on a sacrifice fly by Josh Huffman.

Three walks and a hit batter gave Sam Houston State another run in the bottom of the seventh as Zaleski walked with the bases loaded to score Sebek.

The Bearkats returned the favor, giving up two runs to Central Arkansas in the top of the eighth on three walks, a hit batter, and a single.
