COLLEGE STATION --- The No. 19-ranked Texas A&M men’s tennis team will host No. 39 Louisville in a 3 p.m. dual match on Thursday at the George P. Mitchell Tennis in the Aggies’ final non-conference match on the 2008 schedule.
First serve for the match was originally scheduled for 6 p.m., but the starting time was moved to avoid a conflict with the Texas A&M men’s basketball team’s first-round game against BYU (6:20 p.m. tip). The match against the Cardinals will be the final tune-up before the Aggies’ Big 12 opener against No. 21 Texas Tech on Sunday in Lubbock, Texas.
Louisville brings a 13-3 record to College Station, and have faced two common opponents with the Aggies. The Cardinals split a pair of road matches against Wake Forest (L, 6-1) and Indiana (W, 4-3), while the Aggies beat the Demon Deacons, 4-3, and Indiana, 5-2, at the Mitchell Tennis Center. In their most recent action, Louisville defeated the Hoosiers on March 18, while the Aggies are coming off a 5-2 road loss to Pepperdine on March 15.
“It’s nice to be back home, playing on our courts,” second-year Aggie head coach Steve Denton said. “Louisville will be another difficult match for us. They have been playing extremely well this season, and have posted some good wins. Louisville has been a solid program for a long time, and this year’s team is no different. We moved the match forward to not conflict with basketball, in hopes that the 12th Man can make it out to support us in another difficult match.”
The Aggies (8-5) are 7-0 this season on their home courts, including a 6-0 mark at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center. Senior Matt Bain leads the Aggies in total singles victories with 13 wins in 2007-08, while junior Conor Pollock and freshman Wil Spencer have a team-high nine singles victories in dual match play. Spencer has won five consecutive singles matches at the No. 3 line.
Aggies vs. Cardinals Promotion…The first 150 Texas A&M students at Thursday’s match against Louisville will receive a free Aggie Tennis water bottle.
Where’s Wilson? Promotion...Wilson is the newest teammate to the Texas A&M men’s and women’s tennis teams. Wilson, a smiling tennis ball, will be hiding at every home match this season at the Mitchell Tennis Center. One lucky fan who finds him will receive a pair of Crocs compliments of Texas A&M University and will be entered into a grand prize contest to win an iPod Touch that will be held during the women’s Lone Star Showdown match versus rival Texas on April 16. Fans are encouraged to come out to the matches early to increase their chances of being the first person to find Wilson.
