BRYAN, Texas — David Lee, 13, of Houston, outlasted the wind and the competition to take home medalist honors by three shots at the Traditions Club at Texas A&M. Talia Campbell, 14, of Dallas, sealed the top spot in the Girls Division, also finishing three shots ahead of her peers.
Conducted by the American Junior Golf Association, the AJGA Qualifier for the AJGA Championship at Traditions was held at the Traditions Club at Texas A&M. The tournament field consisted of 80 boys and 19 girls, ages 12-18, from 11 states and Canada. Seventy-six hailed from the home state of Texas. The Boys Division is played the par-72 layout at 6,858 yards, while the Girls Division is played at 5,881 yards.
Having played the course just days before, Lee knew he would be in trouble if he didn’t play a solid round. Lee’s play was dependant on his steady putter.
“I knew I would be dead meat if I didn’t hit the fairways,” said Lee, who opted to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week's event. “I didn’t hit too many greens, but had only 22 putts. If it wouldn’t have been for my putter, I would have been out of luck.”
Qualifying for the tournament were Jordan Rumora, Patrick Gould, Patrick Burke, all of Houston, Patrick O’Meara, Ryan Howard, Ryan Eibner, all of The Woodlands, Texas, Ryan Choi of Colorado Springs, Colo., Ross Rotwein of El Paso, Texas, Brandon Wilhide of Richmond, Texas, Rohan Verma of Kingwood, Texas, Zack Smith of Carthage, Texas, Johnathan Chen of Sugar Land, Texas, and Curtis Reed of Castroville, Texas.
Also qualifying but opting to take a Tournament Exemption were Henry Todd of Trophy Club, Texas, David Klaudt of Dallas, Taylor Mihok and Austin Struble, both of Aledo, Texas, Charlie Saxon of Tulsa, Okla., Nick Tremps of San Antonio, Texas, and Christopher Muriana of Stillwater, Okla.
Campbell’s first impression of the Traditions Club at Texas A&M was one that kept her scrambling all day. Hitting every fairway and carding 10 pars, Campbell was able to come out on top.
“I saw the course and thought there was a lot of water and a lot of danger,” Campbell said. “My drives were all straight and I hit all the fairways, which made up for my lack of a putter.”
Campbell opted to take a Tournament Exemption in lieu of playing in this week’s tournament.
Rounding out those qualifying for the tournament were Chelsea Mocio of Fort Worth, Texas, Christine Lin of Austin, and Kayli Quinton of Cypress, Texas.
