Elvira's 69 leads Aggies To Sixth Place At U.S. Collegiate Championship

ALPHARETTA, GA -- Freshman Nacho Elvira fired a three-under-par 69 on Wednesday to lead Texas A&M to a sixth-place finish at the third annual United States Collegiate Championship at The Golf Club of Georgia.

A&M finished ahead of four top 10-ranked teams and all five teams that placed ahead the Aggies are ranked in the top 12.

No. 5-ranked Southern California captured the title with an even-par 864. No. 6 Oklahoma State was second (867), followed by No. 1 Alabama (872), No. 7 Georgia Tech (875), No. 12 Florida State (877) and A&M (304-293-284=881).

Rounding out the field were No. 3 UCLA (882), Georgia State (883), No. 2 Georgia (886), No. 4 Charlotte (889), No. 9 Stanford (897), East Tennessee State (899), Coastal Carolina (902), Texas (916) and BYU (920).

Oklahoma State’s Trent Leon claimed individual honors with an eight-under score of 69-69-70=208. Elvira (74-72-69=215) and A&M teammate Matt Van Zandt (71-74-70=215) tied for sixth place at one-under.

The Aggies’ Bronson Burgoon (81-74-73=227) tied for 45th, Bobby Gates (78-78-74=230) tied for 56th at Andrea Pavan (90-73-73=236) tied for 68th.

Elvira carded four birdies and an eagle in his round while Van Zandt and Burgoon also posted four birdies.

“The guys showed a lot of heart coming back from a poor first round,” A&M Coach J.,T. Higgins said. “The last two rounds they played about as well as anybody in the tournament. Their confidence is sky-high right now and we feel like we can play with anyone. I’m especially proud of Nacho and Matt. They both have come a long way this spring and have played fantastic golf the last couple of tournaments.”

A&M competes at the Arizona State Thunderbird Invitational April 11-13 in Tempe, Ariz., the final tune-up before the Big 12 Championship April 25-27 in Trinity, Texas.
