HUNTSVILLE – A three-run homer by Alex Survant in the third inning Morgan Mikulin’s solo home run in the fifth gave Sam Houston State a 5-4 come-from-behind victory over McNeese State in the third and final game of a Southland Conference series Wednesday afternoon at Bearkat softball field.
The victory upped Sam Houston’s record to 16-17 for the season and 7-5 in Southland Conference play. McNeese State earned the series victory by winning Tuesday’s doubleheader 3-2 and 3-1, but the SHSU victory prevented a sweep.
McNeese State jumped out to a 4-0 lead. Jenny Clay hit her fourth home run of the season and second of the series for a run in the first inning. Lindsey Langner, Liz Morvant, and Clay had RBI singles as the Cowgirls added three runs in the second.
Sarah Parich started a four-run Bearkat rally in the bottom of the third with a leadoff single. Kendra Spivey singled and Hailey Wiginton advanced the runners with a sacrifice bunt. Casie Everitt singled to score Spivey, then Alex Survant homered to score three more runs and tie the score.
Mikulin homered with two out in the fifth for the game winner.
Brandi Crnkovic (7-10) was the winning pitcher in relief. She allowed only two hits and struck out four in five and one third innings. Mikulin started the contest, giving up four runs on five hits.
Bethany Stefinsky (2-6) was the losing pitcher for McNeese with Michelle LaVoie pitching the final two innings.
Sam Houston State’s next action is a three-game home Southland series with Texas-Arlington Saturday and Sunday at the Bearkat Softball Stadium.
