Brock Picks Up 900th Win In Double Header Sweep Of Houston Baptist

HOUSTON -- Sam Houston State swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Houston Baptist 4-1 and 4-2 to give Bearkat head coach Bob Brock picked up his 900th career coaching victory Tuesday at Huskey Field.

Brock, who has coached 23 seasons at Texas A&M, Baylor, and his alma mater Sam Houston State, now holds a career record of 900 victories, 487 losses, and one. Brock is the 13th active coach in NCAA Division I softball to win 900 games.

Hailey Wiginton went 4-for-7 at the plate in the doubleheader to lead the Bearkats. She opened the first game with a leadoff single in the first inning. Kendra Spivey singled Wiginton to second and Amy Brown brought Wiginton home with a single down the right field line.

Sam Houston upped the lead to 2-0 in the top of the sixth as Morgan Mikulin singled and reached second on an error. Tiffani Woodrum, running for Mikulin, was sacrificed to third by Casie Everitt, then scored by advancing on an illegal pitch.

Houston Baptist produced its only run in the bottom of the sixth as Angelica DeVries tripled, then scored on a throwing error.

The Bearkats added two more runs in the seventh inning as Wiginton singled again, advanced to second on another hit by Spivey, and moved to third on a Mikulin walk. Wiginton scored on a ground out and Alex Survant, who got on base on a fielder?s choice, scored when Everitt was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded.

Houston Baptist got off to a quick 2-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning of the nightcap, but the Bearkats came back to score one run in both the third and fourth innings and two in the fifth.

Wiginton and Tiffani Woodrum scored the winning runs on Husky errors in the fifth.

Mikulin and Brandi Crnkovic pitched in both games. Crnkovic (9-11) was the winner in the first game with Mikulin taking over in the fifth inning to pick up a save. The two reversed roles in the nightcap, with Mikulin (11-7) starting and earning the win and Crnkovic picking up her fourth save of the year.

Sam Houston State stands 20-18 for the season. Houston Baptist drops to 20-10.

The Bearkats resume Southland Conference action this weekend with a three-game series at Southeastern Louisiana.
