WACO -- The Texas A&M women’s tennis team won the doubles point against fourth-ranked Baylor, but the Lady Bears came back to win the match, 5-2, tonight at the Baylor Tennis Center.
Both teams entered the match undefeated in Big 12 Conference matches. With the win, defending league-champion Baylor, improves to 20-2 overall and 6-0 in the Big 12. A&M falls to 10-6, 4-1.
“I’m proud of the girls for putting up a good fight,” A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said, “but we have to have everyone playing their very best on every court to beat a team like Baylor. It was a winnable match, and I hope we get to see them again in the finals of the Big 12 Championship.”
Doubles was the highlight of the night for the Aggies, as they won two of three matches to take a 1-0 lead. Anna Blagodarova and Tiffany Clifford sparked the Aggies, posting their biggest win by upsetting second-ranked Lenka Broosova and Zuzana Zemenova, 8-5, at the No. 1 line.
“That was a great win,” Kleinecke said. “They haven’t played many matches together and have been struggling, but they came through with a huge win tonight, and I am very happy for them.”
The other two matches were both tied when A&M picked up the win at No. 1. A&M’s Christi Liles and Elze Potgieter were tied with 57th-ranked Taylor Ormond and Jelena Stanivuk, 7-7, at the No. 2 line, and the Aggie freshman duo of Stephanie Davidson and Morgan Frank was tied at 6-all with Zuzana Chmelarova and Jana Bielikova.
Baylor evened the doubles as Ormond and Stanivuk won the next two games to hold off Christi Liles and Elze Potgieter, 9-7.
With the No. 3 line tied at 8-8 and the doubles point on the line, the match was decided by a tiebreaker. A&M quickly jumped out to a 3-0 lead and went on to win the tiebreaker, 7-1, to give the Aggies the early lead. It marked only the fifth time Baylor had dropped the doubles point.
Although A&M had early leads on three courts when singles began, Baylor began to steal the momentum. Thirteenth-ranked Broosova downed Blagodarova, 6-2, 6-0 at the No. 3 line to tie the team score at 1-1. The Lady Bears then took the lead as Stanivuk topped Clifford, 6-3, 6-2, at No. 4.
Baylor went up 3-1 as 28th-ranked Ormond defeated Liles, 6-4, 6-4, at the No. 2 line.
Baylor held the edge on the other three courts when it began to rain. After dropping the first set, 6-3, No. 24 Zemenova was up, 6-1, 5-2 against Potgieter at the No. 1 line when the matches were suspended.
Frank held a 2-1 lead in the third set against 81st-ranked Bielikova after splitting the first two, 6-3, 5-7, and Davidson was tied with Chmelarova, 4-4, in the second set after dropping the opener, 7-6 (3).
After an hour, 45-minute rain delay, play resumed, but only on Court 1 as the other courts were still being blown dry, Zemenova needed just two plays to clinch the match for the Lady Bears.
The other two matches returned to action. After being tied at 3-3 in the third set, Frank reeled off three straight games to win the match and extend her team-leading winning streak to six.
Davidson won two consecutive games to win the second set against Chmelarova. With the overall team match already determined, the two played a 10-point super tiebreaker. After leading the entire set, Chmelarova ended the match at 11:30 p.m. with a 10-5 victory.
The Aggies remain on the road this weekend as they take on Missouri (9-8, 1-4 Big 12) in Columbia on Friday and Colorado (7-8, 4-1 Big 12) Sunday in Boulder. Match times are 1 p.m. and 11 a.m. (CDT), respectively.
