COLLEGE STATION -- The Texas A&M equestrian team will end its regular season against Texas Christian University in Mansfield, Texas, on Friday at 1 p.m.
The Aggies (9-4) are coming off a fourth-place finish at the Central
Championships in Manhattan, Kan., last weekend. The Horned Frogs (6-7) earned their first-ever win over cross-town rival SMU last Saturday with an 8-4 road victory.
Friday¹s show will pit two of the best western programs in the country
against each other. TCU will be the No. 1 western seed heading into this
month¹s Varsity Equestrian National Championships (VENC) after posting an 11-0 regular season mark to this point. Texas A&M is the defending VENC national champion western team and has won two of the last three national team titles. The Aggies have earned an 8-4 record in western riding this season and will take the No. 4 seed in the VENC show.
Leading the way for the Aggies will be sophomore horsemanship rider Caroline
Gunn (Greensburg, Ind.). Gunn has turned in a 9-2-1 record this season and
is currently riding a six-match win streak. Gunn has been named most
valuable rider in horsemanship five times this season and turned in two of
the three highest horsemanship scores at the Central Championships last
weekend as well. She has also helped lead the horsemanship riders to a 10-2
mark and ranks No. 2 nationally in the discipline, behind only TCU¹s Kindell
Huffman (10-0; four MVP¹s).
On the hunter seat side, senior Lindsey Lawrence (College Station) has been
superb as of late, leading the equitation on the flat riders to a 9-4
record. Lawrence has personally turned in a 9-3-1 record and has only tasted
defeat twice in her last seven match-ups. Lawrence, like Gunn, posted a
perfect 2-0 record at the Central Championships and in doing so upset
Baylor¹s Nicole Brown, who is ranked as the No. 1 fence rider in the nation
heading into the VENC show.
The two teams have met only once before, a 14-2 A&M victory on Feb. 24,
2007, in College Station. On that day, the Aggie hunter seat riders turned
in a perfect 8-0 victory while the western riders captured a 6-2 win.
Friday¹s show will be held at Fieldstone Park which is located at 7528 Dick
Price Rd., Mansfield, TX 76063.
