HAMMOND, LA – Morgan Mikulin hit a solo home run in the sixth inning to tie the score, then had one of three RBIs in the 10th winning to lead Sam Houston State to an 8-5 victory over Southeastern Louisiana in the first game of a Southland Conference softball doubleheader Saturday at North Oak Park.
Southeastern Louisiana came back to win the nightcap 4-0 for a split in the doubleheader. The two teams will meet to decide the three-game series Sunday afternoon at 1 p.m.
Mikulin also earned the pitching victory in the first game, limiting the Lions to two hits in the final six innings.
Mikulin went 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Amy Brown was 2-for-5 with two RBIs as well. Hailey Wiginton and Janaye Richardson both drove in runs on singles in the top of the 10th inning as Sam Houston broke open the tie with five runs on three hits and two Lion errors.
The Bearkats totaled their eight runs on eight hits. Southeastern Louisiana also totaled eight hits and took advantage of four Sam Houston errors.
Brown gave Sam Houston a 2-0 advantage with a home run in the first inning. The Lions responded with two runs in the bottom of the second inning and another run in the fifth to go up 3-2 before Mikulin tied the game with her home run.
Brandi Crnkovic started the game in the circle for Sam Houston, spreading six hits over four innings and striking out four batters.
Crnkovic (9-12) was the losing pitcher in the second game despite striking out seven Lion batters. Southeastern Louisiana scored its four runs on seven hits.
The Lions scored a run in both the second and fourth innings on RBI singles by Katy Duhe and Blanche Lockhart. Katy Lyman hit a two run homer in the sixth.
Sam Houston State now stands 21-19 for the season record to 21-18 and 10-7 in Southland action, Southeastern Louisiana is 23-13 for the year and 11-8 in league play.
