VICTORIA -- Led by senior Jennifer Heinz, the Sam Houston State women's golf team won the Bobcat Invitational Monday and Tuesday with a 54-hole total of 305-306-293--904 on the par 72, 6,028-yard course at Victoria Country Club.
Sam Houston State started the day four strokes behind second round leader Lamar. But, thanks to a three-under par 69 by Heinz, the Bearkats fired a third round team total of 293 to surpass the Cardinals by nine strokes.
Lamar placed second with a score of 306-301-306--913. Three other Southland Conference schools -- Texas State-San Marcos (924), Central Arkansas (938), and McNeese State (954) -- placed third, fourth, and fifth, respectively.
Heinz ended up as individual medalist champion with a 54-hole score of
77-72-69--218. Linda Persson of Lamar was the individual runner-up with a score of 75-70-78--223.
The tournament marked the Sam Houston State women's third tournament title this season. The Bearkats won the North Texas Mean Green Classic in September and the Nicholls State Colonel Classic in October.
Sam Houston State completes its 2008 schedule on April 21-23 with the
Southland Conference Championship at Beaumont Country Club. The Bearkats are defending Southland women's golf champions.
Other Sam Houston scores were Landa Stewart who finished fifth
(73-80-75--228), Ani Carrillo seventh (77-78-75--230), Emily Bartholet 11th (78-80-74--232), Wendy Joyner 14th (80-76-78--234), and Amanda Carmona 28th (76-87-76--239).
