MEMPHIS, Tenn. -- John Calipari has been recognized for his
accomplishments during the basketball season by The Atlanta Tipoff
Club. He has been named the Naismith National Coach of the Year.
Calipari led the Memphis Tigers to the NCAA title game where
they lost 75-68 in overtime to Kansas.
Memphis won 38 games and was ranked first or second in the AP
poll for a school-record 16 straight weeks.
It's the second Naismith award for Calipari. He also won it in
1996 after leading Massachusetts to the Final Four.
He's only the fifth coach in NCAA Division-one history to lead
two different programs to a number-one national ranking. The others
were Frank McGuire, Ralph Miller, Roy Williams and Eddie Sutton.
