Bearkats Beat Houston Baptist

HUNTSVILLE -- Seth Hammock broke open a scoreless tie with a a three-run shot over the scoreboard at Don Sanders Stadium to power Sam Houston State to a 11-4 non-conference baseball victory over Houston Baptist Wednesday night.

For Hammock, it was his sixth home run of the season. The Bearkats totaled their 10 runs on 11 hits and three Husky errors. Hammock, Keith Stein, Bobby Verbick and Ryan Weber each had two hits for SHSU.

The Bearkats added two more runs in the fifth inning on a ground out by Keith Stein with the bases loaded and a sacrifice fly by Ryan Trevino.

Mark Wyatt's RBI double put Sam Houston up 6-1 in the sixth. Stein tripled to spark a four-run seventh inning as the Kats extended their lead to 10.1.

Brent Powers threw three scoreless innings as the Bearkats? starter, striking out four batters. Guillaume Duguay (1-0) picked up the victory in relief. Stephen Price, Adam Albright, Casey Springer, and Matt Shelton also pitched in relief..

Dallas Baptist added three runs in the top of the eight. The Huskies scored their four runs on seven hits.

Sam Houston State upped its record to 18-13 for the season. Houston Baptist dropped to 14-17. The Bearkats travel to Beaumont for a three-game weekend Southland Conference series that begins Friday evening.
