COLLEGE STATION -- The Texas A&M men’s tennis team led the nation in attendance for the month of March in rankings recently compiled by the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA).
The nationally-ranked Aggies led March attendance with a total of 3,381 fans, which more than doubled second-place Illinois at 1,388. A&M also claimed the month’s highest single-match attendance record on March 28, when 766 fans watched the Aggie men defeat Oklahoma and the Aggie women beat Nebraska in a tennis doubleheader at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center.
In overall season attendance, A&M stands in a close second to national leader Virginia at 4,716 averaging 471 fans per match. The Cavaliers are averaging 545 fans per match with an overall season attendance of 5,424.
The Aggies have already surpassed their previously single-match best with a season-high 789 fans in attendance at the team’s final home regular-season match versus rival Baylor on April 2. A&M will play host to the upcoming 2008 Big 12 Conference Tennis Championships on April 24-27 at the Mitchell Tennis Center as well as the 2009 NCAA Tennis Championships.
