Led by Todd Sebek, Keith Stein, and Bobby Verbick, Sam Houston State totaled 23 hits in a 15-12 victory over Lamar to complete a three-game Southland Conference sweep of the Cardinals Sunday afternoon.
Lamar entered the weekend in first place in the Southland Conference West Division with a 10-2 record. But Sam Houston totaled 56 hits and scored 38 runs to take the series, giving the Bearkats a 21-13 record for the season and 9-6 mark in Southland Conference action.
The Cardinals drop to 20-14 for the year and 10-5 in league action.
Sebek started the action early with a first inning lead-off double. Keith Stein singled to score Sebek and Seth Hammock added a two-run single to put SHSU up 3-0.
Sam Houston added six runs in the third inning on seven hits. The Kats also scored two runs in the fourth and three more in the fifth to take a 14-2 lead.
Sebek went 4-for-6 at the plate, Stein 3-for-6, and Bobby Verbick 3-for-5. Ryan Teppera limited the Cardinals to four hits in five innings to pick up the victory on the mound.
Matt Shelton, Adam Albright, Stephen Price, and Zac Baker all pitched in relief. When Lamar rallied in the eighth and ninth innings to cut the lead to 15-12, Casey Springer took the mound and got the final two outs for his sixth save of the season.
Sam Houston State travels to Texas Southern Wednesday. The Bearkats return to Southland Conference action Friday with a three-game league series against McNeese State at Don Sanders Stadium.
