LAKE CHARLES, LA The Lamar Cardinals posted a 10 under par team round of 278 to surge into the lead after 36 holes in the 45th annual Southland Conference men's golf championship at Gray Plantation Golf Course Tuesday.
The final round of the tournament will be played Wednesday.
Sam Houston State, leaders by one stroke over Lamar after the first round, slipped to second place despite firing a team total four strokes better than the Bearkats shot in Monday?s first round.
The Cardinals, ranked No. 28 in NCAA Division I men?s golf, lead with a 36-hole score of 298-278?576. Sam Houston is 14 strokes back at 297-293?590. Texas State-San Marcos and Southeastern Louisiana stand in third and four place, respectively, with scores of 592 and 593.
Rusty Helson led the Lamar charge with a four-under par second round of 68, one of two four-under rounds today in the tournament.
Sigmundar Masson of McNeese State leads the individual medalist competition with a 36-hole total of 74-69?143. Ed Brescher of Southeastern Louisiana, Helson and Casey Clendenon of Lamar, and Casey Roberson of Texas St-San Marcos are tied for second place with 144 totals.
Scott Kelly of Sam Houston State is tied for sixth place with a 73-72?145 total. Other Sam Houston State scores and standings are Brandon Frankhouser 12th with a 74-74?148, Fergal Rafferty 16th with a 75-74?149, Scooter Jefferson 26th 75-76?151, and Stewart Bannatyne 36th 83-73--156
