HUNTSVILLE - Morgan Mikulin had a walk-on RBI single in the first game and Lauren Burns drove in the only run of the second game with a sixth inning single as Sam Houston State swept a Southland Conference softball doubleheader with Nicholls State, winning 2-1 and 1-0.
The Bearkats, who upped the season record to 28-24 with the two wins, will go for a series sweep when the two meet in a third game at 12 noon at Bearkat Softball Stadium.
Brandi Crnkovic (14-14) earned both victories in the circle for Sam Houston. Mikulin started the first game, giving up four hits in five innings while striking out two. Crnkovic took over after the Colonels had tied the game 1-1 in the top of the six and struck out five batters in her two innings of work.
Crnkovic went the distance in the second game, limited Nicholls State to one hit. She struck out eight Colonel batters.
A RBI single by Tanya Hooser put Sam Houston ahead 1-0 in the fifth inning. Nicholls State tied the game with a double and a single in the top of the sixth. In the bottom of the seventh, Hailey Wiginton and Hooser hit back-to-back singles and Mikulin singled to right field for the game winner.
Mikulin got things started for Sam Houston in the sixth inning of the second game after five scoreless innings. Mikulin singled and Tiffani Woodrum took her place as a pinch runner. Burns singled to center field for the game winner.
Sam Houston upped its Southland Conference mark to 13-10 with the victories. Nicholls drops to 25-24 for the year and 12-11 in league action.
