SHSU Moves Up At SLC Tournament

BEAUMONT - Led by senior Jennifer Heinz, who fired a two-over second round score of 73, Sam Houston State moved up from fourth to third in the team standings after 36 holes in the seventh annual Southland Conference Women's Golf Championships Tuesday.

The final round of the tournament will be held Wednesday on the par 71,
6,069-yard course at Beaumont Country Club.

Texas State-San Marcos continues to lead the team competition with a 36-hole score of 300-300-600. Lamar is second at 305-299-604 and Sam Houston State third at 306-302-608.

Rounding out the team competition is Texas-San Antonio 312-304--616, Central Arkansas 308-308-616, McNeese State 309-308-617, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 304-317-621, and Nicholls State 314-332-646.

Heinz and Landa Stewart are the top Sam Houston State players in the
individual medalist standings, both with 151 totals. Wendy Joyner stands 11th with a 153 total, Ani Carrillo 14th at 154, and Emily Bartholt 29th with a 159.

Linn Gustafsson of Lamar is the individual leader with a 71-72-143 total.
Laura Baker of UTSA, Nicole Forshner of Central Arkansas, and Lacy McKinley of McNeese State all are tied for second place at 148.

Sam Houston State is the defending Southland Conference women's golf champion. The Bearkats won the 2007 title finishing 13 strokes ahead of Lamar.

The Bearkats also won the league championship in 2004. Lamar, the host school this year, has three SLC titles in its history, winning in 2003,
2005, and 2006. Texas State-San Marcos won the inaugural Southland
tournament in 2002.
