BEAUMONT - Led by senior Jennifer Heinz, who finished tied for second place in the individual medalist standings, Sam Houston State shot the best 18-hole team score of the final round to finish as runner-up in the team standings at seventh annual Southland Conference Women's Golf Championships Tuesday.
The 54-hole tournament was held Monday through Wednesday on the par 71, 6,069-yard course at Beaumont Country Club.
The Bearkat women fired a team total of 301 Wednesday to end up in second place with a 909 total, just one stroke behind Southland champion Texas State-San Marcos.
The Bobcats earned their second Southland women's golf title with a 54-hole score of 300-300-308-908. Sam Houston was runner-up at 306-302-301-909.
Lamar placed third at 305-299-306-910.
Rounding out the field were Texas-San Antonio (312-304-315-931) in fourth, Central Arkansas (308-308-316-932) in fifth, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi (304-317-315-936) in sixth, McNeese State (309-308-323-940) in seventh, and Nicholl State (314-332-325-971).
Sam Houston stood in fourth place after Monday's first round and was in third place after Tuesday's play. The final three holes proved to be the difference for Texas State-San Marcos. The Bobcats top four golfers played holes 16, 17, and 18 in four-over while the Bearkats were six over.
The runner-up finish is the second for the Bearkats in the seven-year
history of the women's tournament. Sam Houston State won the Southland in 2004 and 2007 and were also runners-up in 2002.
Linn Gustafsson of Texas State-San Marcos won the individual medalist title with a three-day score of 71-72-77-220. Heinz totaled 78-73-74-225 to tied as runner-up with Nicole Forshner of Centeral Arkansas who scored 74-74-77-225. Lacy McKinley of McNeese State placed fourth with a 72-76-78-226. Tied with her for fourth place was Hillary Zeigler of Lamar at 77-72-77-226.
Landa Stewart of Sam Houston State placed sixth with a 73-78-76-227 total. Other Sam Houston State competitors were Ani Carrillo ninth 79-75-74-228, Wendy Joyner 13th 77-76-77-230, and Emily Bartholet 34th 78-81-85-244.
