COLLEGE STATION --- Five Texas A&M football players were mentioned on veteran National Football League writer Rick Gosselin’s NFL Draft Rankings in the Dallas Morning News on Friday. The annual NFL Draft begins with the first two rounds at 2 p.m. (central) on Saturday, followed by rounds 3-7 on Sunday (9 a.m. start).
Tight end Martellus Bennett and defensive tackle Red Bryant were listed on Gosselin’s NFL Draft Top 100. Bennett was rated No. 46 on the top 100 list and ranked No. 3 on Gosselin’s position ranking at tight end. Bryant was ranked No. 90 overall and No. 9 among defensive tackles.
Bennett, from Alief Taylor High School, tied the Texas A&M tight end school record with 105 catches (with former NFL first-round pick Rod Bernstine) in just three seasons with the Aggies. Bennett’s 1,246 career receiving yards were a school record, and he also caught at least one pass in a record 29 consecutive games.
Bryant, from Jasper High School, was a four-year starter for the Aggies at defensive tackle. He compiled 127 tackles, including 11 for loss of yardage, during his career. As a senior, Bryant posted a career-high 46 tackles, with three for losses and batted down a pair of passes.
Also earning mention from Gosselin on his position rankings were Chris Alexander (No. 9 fullback), Cody Wallace (No. 5 offensive center) and Chris Harrington (No. 12 defensive end).
Alexander, from Humble High School, was a three-year starter at fullback for the Aggies, excelling as a lead blocker and receiver out of the backfield. He finished his career with 214 yards and three touchdowns on 49 carries and 26 catches for 236 yards and four scores.
Wallace, from Cuero High School, was a three-year starter at center and a finalist for the Dave Rimington Trophy in 2007. Wallace, who started 37 straight games for the Aggies, was named Big 12 Co-Offensive Lineman of the Year after averaging 15 knockdown blocks per game and grading out at 87 percent as a senior in 2007.
Harrington, from St. Pius High School in Houston, Texas, was a three-year starter at defensive end for the Aggies. Harrington compiled 156 tackles and posted 15 sacks and 25 TFLs during his career. Last season Harrington contributed 58 tackles, including five TFLs and two forced fumbles.
Other Aggie seniors hoping to hear their names called this weekend are: cornerback Marquis Carpenter (Melbourne, Fla.), offensive tackle Corey Clark (Spring Branch, Texas), wide receiver Kerry Franks (Orange, Texas), defensive back Stephen Hodge (Richardson, Texas), defensive tackle Henry Smith (Aliceville, Ala.), wide receiver Earvin Taylor (Mission, Texas), tight end Joey Thomas (Austin, Texas) and linebacker Misi Tupe (St. George, Utah).
