Kats Outscore Patriots

HUNTSVILLE – Seth Hammock and Nick Zaleski hit run-scoring singles in the bottom of the eighth inning for the winning runs as Sam Houston State defeated Dallas Baptist 10-8 in a non-conference baseball game Tuesday night at Don Sanders Stadium.

The Bearkats upped their season record ti 27-18 while the Patriots dropped to 29-13.

Dallas Baptist jumped out to a 3-0 lead, scoring two runs in the top of the third on one hit and an error and a third tally in the fourth inning when Austin Knight doubled, advanced to third on a wild pitch, and scored on a sacrifice fly by Bradshaw Perry.

Sam Houston used four hits and two Patriot errors to rally for five runs in the bottom of the fifth. Heath Pugh had an RBI single and Keith Stein a two-run single to give the Bearkats a 5-3 lead.

Trevor Head blasted a home run over the scoreboard in center field and Brandon Bantz doubled, then scored on an error to tie the contest 5-5.

Ryan Trevino was hit by a pitch to start the fifth, Nick Zaleski doubled, and Trevino scored on a ground out by Pugh. Jaimie Rohlmeier’s single scored Zaleski to put Sam Houston up 7-5.

Dallas Baptist tied the contest 7-7 in the top of the sixth, scoring two runs on three hits and an error. Head and Nick Santos each hit RBI singles.

The Patriots scored again in the top of the seventh as Ryan Enos walked, advanced to third on a single, then scored on a sacrifice fly. Sam Houston evened the contest with a run in the bottom of the seventh on back-to-back hits by Rohlmeier and Ryan Weber.

Keith Stein opened the bottom of the eighth with a single, was sacrificed to second, then scored on a single to left field by SethHammock. Nick Zaleski singled to scored Hammock to put the Kats up by two runs.

Casey Springer (1-1) was the winning pitcher in relief. Zac Baker picked up his third save of the year.
Sam Houston State will travel to Waco for a 6 p .m. contest with Baylor Wednesday.
