HUNTSVILLE -- The Sam Houston State Bearkats used a big second inning which included a Heath Pugh grand slam in a 7-1 victory over Northwestern State Saturday afternoon.
Also for the second straight game, the Kats got a great performance on the hill, as Guillaume Dugay scattered 10 hits in 8 1/3 innings of work to improve his record to 3-1 on the season.
The Demons (24-22, 14-8 SLC) jumped out to a brief 1-0 lead off a home run off the bat of Mike Jaworski, his 15th of the season.
But in the third, the SHSU (29-19, 14-9) offense broke out. Ryan Weber got things started with a walk followed by a single by Todd Sebek. Bobby Verbick then doubled home Sebek to tie the game at one.
Seth Hammock singled home Stein to put the Kats up 2-1. After Nick Zeleski was hit by a pitch, Pugh blasted a shot to right-center for a grand slam and a 6-1 lead. It was the third home run of the season for Pugh.
The grand slam was the third this season for the Bearkats. Prior to this year, the Kats had not hit a grand slam since 2005.
In the 8th inning, the Kats added one more run on an RBI single by Zeleski.
The Kats and Demons will conclude the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
