HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston State baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Northwestern State on Sunday afternoon with a 7-5 victory over the Demons.
Zach Baker picked up the win in relief for the Kats, pitching the final three innings of the ball game, allowing just two runs. He entered the game in the top of the seventh inning and the game tied at five. He gave up a single to the second batter he faced, but benefitted from an inning-ending double play. Another single in the eighth was wiped out by the Kats’ third double play of the game.
The Bearkats (30-19, 15-9 SLC) were able to take advantage of four errors by the Demons (24-23, 14-9), with two of them on bunts when the Kats were trying to move runners over, including the two winning runs in the seventh inning. After a Nick Zeleski single, Ryan Trevino put down a bunt that rolled between the legs of Demon first baseman Mike Jaworski. A sacrifice bunt by Heath Pugh moved the runners up a base and a single Jaime Rohlmeier brought in the two go-ahead runs.
The Kats took advantage of the same situation in the fourth inning. Trailing 3-0, Trevino walked and Mark Wyatt singled. Rohlmeier put down a bunt and Demon pitcher Clayton Cooper made a bad throw at third base, allowing Wyatt and Trevino to score. Rohlmeier then scored on a sacrifice fly by Todd Sebek to tie the game at three.
The Demons took the lead back in the next half inning on a two-RBI double by Chase Lyles to give them a 5-3 advantage.
The Kats cut the lead to one in the bottom half of the inning on an infield single by Trevino to score Seth Hammock, who doubled to start the inning. The Kats played small ball in the bottom of the sixth to tie the game back up. Rohlmeier singled to start the frame and was moved over to second on a bunt Ryan Weber. Rohlmeier then scored on an infield single by Sebek and an error by Demon pitcher Kyle Broughton.
Broughton (3-5) took the loss, allowing four the Bearkat runs. Just three runs for the Kats were earned on the afternoon.
For the Bearkats it was the third Southland Conference sweep in their last four chances. Last season the Bearkats swept four Southland Conference weekends. The Bearkats defeated the Demons 5-1 on Friday night and 7-1 Saturday afternoon.
Sam Houston State will be back in action Tuesday night for their final midweek game of the season against Texas A&M. They will be on the road next weekend in a three-game set with Southeastern Louisiana.
