Three Sam Houston State Softball Players Receive All-Southland Conference Honors

PLANO -- Hailey Wiginton, freshman outfielder for Sam Houston State from Friendswood, has been named as a first team selection on the 2008 All-Southland Conference softball team.

Wiginton led the Bearkats and ranked second in the Southland Conference in hitting during the regular season with a .389 average, starting in 51 games. She posted 61 hits in 157 at bats with 10 doubles, one triple and three home runs.

Morgan Mikulin, sophomore pitcher/designated player for the Bearkats, is a third team selection. The Huntsville product led Sam Houston in runs batted in (36) and home runs (7) and ranked second on the team in hitting (.317).

In the pitching circle, she compiled a 1.98 earned run average an 15-12
won-loss record. She started 25 games and pitched in 42 of the Bearkats' 60 contests. Mikulin posted 97 strike outs and had five shutouts.

Brandi Crnkovic, junior from Caldwell, received honorable mention All-SLC selection as a pitcher. Crnkovic led the Bearkats in strike outs (186) and produced a 2.81 earned run average, playing in 47 games with 35 starts. She hurled seven shutouts and was credited with five saves.

The All-Southland Conference softball honor squad is selected by vote of the league's head coaches and sports information directors.

The SLC Softball Tournament begins Thursday in San Marcos, as No. 7 seed Sam Houston State enters as the defending champion. This year's tournament is single elimination for the first time in league history.

No. 5 seed McNeese State and No. 8 seed Southeastern Louisiana open the tournament at 11 a.m., with No. 6 Nicholls State and No. 7 Sam Houston State in game two at 1:30. No. 4 seed Stephen F. Austin awaits the winner of game one at 4 p.m., while No. 3 UTSA will play the winner of game two at 6:30 p.m.

The game three and four winner will face No. 2 UT Arlington and No. 1 Texas State-San Marcos at 4 and 6:30 p.m., respectively, on Friday.

The championship game is set for Saturday at 4 p.m.
