With victories in both the 4x100 and 4x400 relays and individual gold medals in the shot put, 400 meters and the 400 meter hurdles, the Sam Houston State women’s track and field team earned their third Southland Conference Outdoor Track and Field championship in the past four years.

Sam Houston State won the meet with 175.5 total points. Texas State-San Marcos was the team runner-up with 148.5 points, followed by Stephen F. Austin 124.83, UTSA 70.67, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 69, Lamar 48, Texas-Arlington 48, Southeastern Louisiana 43.5, McNeese State 39, Northwestern State 37, and Nicholls State 14.

Tiana Lee, Tiffany Singleton, the 4x100 relay, and 4x400 relay all took first places Sunday for the Bearkat women.

Lee, Jessica Fisher, Dess Meek, and Regina Offord took the 4x100 relay with a time of 45.61 Singleton took the gold in the 400 meters with a clocking of 53.86 seconds. Lee won the 400 meter hurdles with a mark of 1:01.20. The Bearkats won the 4x400 with a time of 3:44.28

Lee also placed third in the 100 meter hurdles (13.79). Fisher was runner-up in the 200 meters (23.74) and third in the 100 meters (11.66).

Mallory Adams placed third in the discus with a throw of 143 feet, three inches. Karen Klintoe was a third place finisher in the pole vault with a mark of 12 feet, 1.5 inches.

Michael Courtney surged into the lead on the final lap to lead Sam Houston to a victory in the 4x400 relay and push the Bearkat men into a fourth place Southland Conference finish Sunday.

Courtney and Lane Dennis highlighted Sunday’s running finals with individual victories at the Southland Conference outdoor track and field championships and ran on the winning 4x400 relay with Daryl Hayes and George Whitney.

Texas-San Antonio won the men’s event with 138.5 points. Southeastern Louisiana was runner-up with 129 points, Texas-Arlington third at 106, Sam Houston fourth with 86 points, followed by Stephen F. Austin 83.5, Texas State-San Marcos 75, McNeese State 63, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi 60, Lamar 38, and Northwestern State 35.

Courtney won the 400 meter dash with a time of 46.85 seconds. Dennis took the gold medal in the 400 meter hurdles with a mark of 50.63 seconds.

Travis Matthews was the runner-up in the pole vault with a height of 16 feet, 6.75 inches. Darryl Hayes finished second in the 400 meters with a time of 47.15 seconds.

The Bearkat 4x100 relay of Kevin Houston, Hayes, Courtney, and Dennis placed third with a time of 40.39 seconds.
