HUNTSVILLE, TX – Nick Zaleski’s RBI single in the bottom of the seventh scored the winning run as Sam Houston State rallied from three runs down to defeat Stephen F. Austin 10-4 in a Southland Conference baseball game Thursday night at Don Sanders Stadium.
Dallas Gallant (7-3) spread six hits over eight innings to pick up the victory on the mound. The freshman from Trinity, who is 7-1 in Southland Conference play, struck out six batters and walked three.
Sam Houston State (32-22, SLC 17-11) totaled 15 hits with Seth Hammock going 4-for-4 and Bobby Verbick 3-for-4 at the plate.
Stephen F. Austin (24-28, SLC 11-16) was eliminated for contention for the Southland Conference post-season tournament with the loss. The SLC tournament will be held at Sam Houston State’s Don Sanders Stadium beginning Wednesday.

Stephen F. Austin took advantage of two Bearkat errors in the second inning to even the score 1-1. Kevin Croft led off the inning with a double, moved to third on an error, then scored on a sacrifice bunt by Matt Rotley.
The Lumberjacks scored three runs in the top of the fifth. Noe Trevino led off with a single and Kevin Crabtree walked before Sean Meyers doubled to score Trevino and Crabtree. Meyers was sacrificed to third and scored on a single by Justin Roland to up SFA up 4-1.
With one out in the bottom of the fifth, the Bearkats picked up three runs on four consecutive hits. First, Todd Sebek and Keith Stein singled, then both scored on a double by Bobby Verbick. Seth Hammock’s single score Verbick to tie the contest again at 4-4.
Sam Houston strung together four straight hits again with one out in the bottom of the seventh. Verbick and Hammock singled. Nick Zaleski singled to score Verbick and Ryan Trevino singled down the right field line to score Hammock. Heath Pugh’s sacrifice fly scored Zaleski to give the Kats a 7-4 lead.
Sebek led off the bottom of the eighth with a single, stole second, moved to third on an error, then scored on a wild pitch. Nick Zaleski singled to scored Hammock and Verbick.
Sam Houston and SFA will play the second game of the series in a 3 p.m. game Friday at Don Sanders.
