A&M Women’s Tennis Dominates ITA National Attendance Race

COLLEGE STATION -- Texas A&M women’s tennis easily won the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s inaugural national attendance race, the ITA announced today.

The Aggies, who led the race throughout the entire season, dominated in all three categories: total attendance, average attendance, and single-match attendance. A&M totaled 5,655 fans in 10 regular-season matches played at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center, more than doubling second-place Baylor which drew 2,149 fans throughout the season.

“This is a great honor for our program,” A&M coach Bobby Kleinecke said. “It tells people across the nation what we’ve knows for many years: A&M has the greatest loyal fan support. Most recruits enjoy playing in front of people, and this shows that A&M is a fun place to play and for fans to watch.”

A&M’s 566 average attendance more than tripled Michigan, which finished second with a 188 average. In addition, A&M held down the top four spots for single-match attendance, including a season-high 806 fans against Texas on April 16.

“Fans have bought into what we are doing here because they enjoy watching Aggie teams compete with so much heart, lay everything out on the court and represent A&M in such a positive manner,” Kleinecke said. “The electric atmosphere created by our fans makes A&M a fun place to play for our team, as well as opponents for the most part.”

A&M went 7-3 in regular-season home matches and 8-4 in all home matches, which included two matches at the Big 12 Championships hosted by A&M. A&M finished the season 17-9 after advancing to the second round of the NCAA Championships.

A&M will serve as host of the 2009 NCAA Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships.
