Huntsville-Seth Hammock, Bobby Verbick, and Keith Stein all were first team selections and Todd Sebek, Dallas Gallant, and Jaime Rohlmeier were also honored as the 2008 All-Southland Conference baseball team has been announced.
The head baseball coaches and sports information directors of the league vote for the honor team.
The six Bearkats honored as All-Southland Conference combined to lead Sam Houston State to a fourth place regular season finish in the league and a 33-23 overall record. The Bearkats produced a school record .337 batting average this season to lead the SLC.
Hammock leads Sam Houston with a .372 average including 12 doubles, a triple, and 11 home runs. The junior third baseman from Corpus Christi produced 52 RBIs during the regular season and a slugging percentage of .633.
Stein posted a .366 batting average this season with 22 doubles, six triples, and nine home runs. The senior outfielder from College Station owns a .385 career batting average in his two years at Sam Houston, the highest career average in Bearkat history.
Verbick leads Sam Houston in home runs with 12 this year and sports .353 batting average. The senior outfielder from Angleton holds a .643 slugging average with 14 doubles, five triples, and 47 RBIs.
Sebek hit .359 with 23 doubles, two triples, and five home runs. The senior outfielder from Kerrville has produced a .472 on base percentage as the Bearkats’ leadoff hitter.
Gallant produced a 7-1 record on the mound in Southland Conference play this year. The freshman from Trinity owns a 5.59 earned run average with 43 strike outs in 53 innings.
Rohlmeier hit .327 this year with 27 runs batted in. The junior from Spring started 40 games at second base and five contests at third base.
Sam Houston State begins play in the Southland Conference tournament Wednesday at 7 p.m. against Northwestern State. The SLC event will be played at Don Sanders Stadium on the SHSU campus.
The Bearkats won the Southland tournament in 1996 and last year, both times as the No. 4 seed. Sam Houston is the No. 4 seed again this year.
The No. 1 seed has won the Southland tournament once in the event’s 15-year history (Lamar in 2003). Seven times, the No. 1 seed has gone two-and-out without a victory in the tournament.
