OKLAHOMA CITY- A&M senior Megan Gibson has been listed as one of the top three finalists for the 2008 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year, the Amateur Softball Association announced today.
Gibson boasts an impressive 36-1 record and 0.92 ERA in the circle for the Aggies. In 250 innings of work, Gibson has fanned 304 hitters, averaging eight strikeouts per game. The Big 12 Pitcher and Player of the Year has posted double-digit strikeouts in five of her last six games, totaling 13 on the season. The Spring, Texas-native has not allowed a run in her last 28 innings pitched, holding opponents to a stifling .161 batting average.
At the plate this season, Gibson is hitting .339. The Midwest All-Region first team selection has driven in a team-leading 47 RBIs off 57 hits, including 14 doubles, a triple and 13 homeruns.
Gibson led the Aggies to their best ever finish in conference play (17-1) and has helped A&M match a school second-best record for wins in a season (52).
The two-time All-American led the Big 12 in walks (46), wins (36), shutouts (19), innings pitched (250), strikeouts (304) and complete games (35).
An initial “Watch List” was released on January 30 and the list of 25 finalists was announced on April 9. The field of finalists was trimmed to 10 on May 7 just prior to the start of postseason competition.
For the fourth consecutive year, the three finalists for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year come from different conferences including the Southeastern Conference, the Big 12 Conference, and the Atlantic Coast Conference. These three individuals in their senior seasons have already garnered top awards in their respective conferences and two of them have led their teams into the NCAA Super Regionals.
The winner of the 2008 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award will be announced Tuesday, May 27 during the WCWS Party at the Park at ASA Hall of Fame Stadium.
