COLUMBIA, S.C. -- The Texas Rangers made South Carolina infielder Justin Smoak their top pick in today's Major League Baseball draft.
Smoak was selected 11th.
Smoak is a switch-hitting first baseman who led the Gamecocks
with 23 home runs this season and a blistering .383 average.
The first baseman only committed 12 errors in three years with
the Gamecocks. He is the school's career home runs leader with 62
-- smashing the old mark by 14.
Smoak's teammate and roommate, Reese Havens, was selected 22nd
by the New York Mets.
The only South Carolina player selected higher in the draft than
Smoak was Drew Meyer, who was picked 10th by the Rangers in 2002.
