COLLEGE STATION -- The Texas A&M men’s tennis team will open the 2009 spring season in the Sunshine State as the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Men’s Kick-Off Draft was held on Thursday.
The Aggies, fresh off a No. 23 finish in the final ITA team rankings, were among the nation’s top 60 teams to participate in the inaugural draft which determined four-team matchups at 15 different host sites to be played during the opening week of the dual season on Jan. 30-Feb. 1, 2009. First round winners and losers face each other in the second round. The 15 teams that win both matches will advance to the prestigious ITA National Team Indoor Championships to be held on Feb. 13-16, 2009, at the Midtown Tennis Club in Chicago.
With the ninth overall pick, Texas A&M head coach Steve Denton selected to travel to the University of Florida where the Aggies will be the No. 2 seed and will face No. 3 seed North Carolina State in the season opener on Jan. 30 in Gainesville, Fla. A&M will then take on either top-seeded Florida or fourth-seeded Arizona on Jan. 31 as teams are guaranteed two matches at each site.
Florida, who finished 10th nationally in the final ITA rankings, will play host to the Aggies, Wolfpack and Wildcats at the Linder Stadium at Ring Tennis Complex. N.C. State and Arizona finished 53rd and 56th respectively and were among the top teams in the Atlantic Coast and Pac-10 Conferences this past season. The A&M men will release the remainder of its schedule at a later date.
