COLLEGE STATION -- Kevin McNab was the most recent Aggie to be added to the NCAA Outdoor Championship field when he was an at-large selection in the 3,000-meter steeplechase over the weekend.
Ranked No. 2 in the women’s field and No. 3 in the men’s field, Texas A&M enters the NCAA Championships with the most athletes of any other school in the field.
Taking 34 Aggies to Des Moines, Iowa, it’s also the largest contingent to ever represent A&M at the national championship meet, which is in its 87th year on the men’s side and 27th year for the women.
McNab experienced a bit of misfortune during the Big 12 Championships in Boulder last month. Running in third placed with a lap and a half remaining, McNab tripped over a barrier injuring his knee and was unable to finish the race.
Two weeks later, competing at the NCAA Midwest Regional, McNab placed sixth. The top five finishers secured automatic berths into the national meet, but McNab had to wait out the at-large procedure following the regional weekend.
He finally heard good news late on Friday evening informing him he made the NCAA field. McNab has a season best time of 8:49.76 when he placed sixth at the Penn Relays.
Of the 34 Aggie athletes entered in the meet, there are 17 men and 17 women. They combine for a total of 41 entries for Texas A&M in 21 events.
The A&M women feature 23 entries in 10 events, which includes five sprinters in the 200, four in the 100 and four javelin throwers. The Aggie men will have 18 entries in 11 events, which will include four triple jumpers and two discus throwers along with a pair of sprinters in the 100, 200 and 400 meters.
Sunday was a travel day for the Aggies, who will have a pair of workouts on the blue track surface of Drake Stadium on Monday and Tuesday. Action begins on Wednesday, June 11, and continues through Saturday, June 14.
Coverage of the NCAA Championship will be available on CBS College Sports Network (formerly CSTV) from 7 to 10 p.m. (CST) on Friday, June 13. Then CBS will have live coverage from 3 to 5 p.m. on Saturday, June 14.
