BRYAN -- The Brazos Valley Bombers defeated the East Texas Pumpjacks 3-2 to improve to 4-3 on the summer. The win spoiled Clint Helms return to the Bryan-College Station area. Playing for the Bombers last summer, Helms pitched the only no-hitter in TCL history.
The game was close throughout as the Bombers’ trio of pitchers, Sam Strickland, Jonathon Conrad, and Garrett Duff battled Helms to a 2-2 tie through seven innings. The Bombers got things going in the bottom of the eighth inning, however as T.J. Mittelstaedt led things off with a walk. Nick Anders followed with a single and two batters later, Cliff Vaughn strode to the plate with runners on the corners and a chance to tie the game. With the crowd holding its collective breath, Pumjacks pitcher Kory Cleveland delivered a first-pitch fastball that Vaughn drove into right field to score Mittelstaedt and put the Bombers up 3-2.
The Pumjacks gave the Bombers a scare in the top of the ninth, as they put runners on first and second base with only one out. Just when it seemed like the Pumpjacks had the momentum, Bombers coach Brent Alumbaugh sent his closer, Dustin Rasco, in to save the game. Rasco came through like a pro, striking out the final two batters and giving the Bombers the first game of the series.
Brazos Valley Ballpark was hopping with excitement tonight as it was Kids Eat Free night at Brazos Valley Ballpark. Tomorrow will be Margaritaville Wednesday, featuring $2 margaritas. Cody Springer will get the start tomorrow for the Bombers as they go for the series sweep over the Pumpjacks.
